Turn a comment into a conversation

  • How comment to DM works, the one rule that breaks most plans, and what your message has to say.
  • You only get to send one.

The rules you cannot get around

Every comment to DM tool uses the same Meta feature, called a private reply. These rules come from Meta's own developer docs.

RuleWhat it means for you
One message per commentYou get a single message. Not a sequence.
7 days to send itCounted from when they commented.
They must reply firstOnly then can you send more, and only within 24 hours of their reply.
Live is differentOn Instagram Live you can only send during the broadcast.
750 an hourPer account, for comments on posts and reels.

One comment, one message

Diagram. Someone comments. You get one message, sent within 7 days. Only if they reply can you send more, within 24 hours.

  1. They comment your word

  2. You send one message

    Within 7 days

No reply: the chat is over

  3. They reply

  4. You can send more

Within 24 hours of their reply

These rules come from Meta. Every tool has to follow them.

The one that catches people out

One message per comment. Not one per person. If they do not reply to your first message, the chat is over and you cannot restart it.

Set it up in sprkly

  1. Open DM automation in sprkly.
  2. Pick a template, like "Auto-DM links from comments".
  3. Pick the post and the word. Add your link.
  4. Go live.

It is on every plan, Instagram only. Free includes 10 contacts a month per account, Creator 100 and Power 1,000.

The one message you get

Your message has two jobs: give them what you promised, and get them to reply.

  1. Give them the thing, right away. Do not make them ask twice.
  2. Say who you are, in one line. They may not remember which video this was.
  3. Ask an easy question. A reply opens the door for 24 hours.
  4. Make replying take two seconds. Yes or no, or pick A or B.
Sending a free guide
Here you go, that is the full guide: <your link>
I am <your name>, I make the videos about <your topic>. Hope it is useful.
Quick one while you are here. Are you just starting out, or have you been posting a while? One word is fine.
Sending a price or a product
Here is everything, prices included: <your link>
Any questions, just ask, you are talking to a real person here.
What made you comment, out of interest? Helps me know what to make next.

Do not hold the thing hostage

"Reply YES and I will send it" gets replies, but it annoys people and spends your only message on a hoop. Give them what they came for. Then ask.

Pick the word and the post

  • Short. One word, five or six letters.
  • Easy to spell.
  • Not a word people already use. YES, INFO and LINK show up in normal comments.
  • Tied to the thing. GUIDE for a guide. PRICES for prices.

Run it on one post that is already doing well. Comment to DM turns attention you have into chats. It does not make a post take off.

The ask, said out loud
If you want the full thing, comment GUIDE and I will send it over.

Put the word on screen at the same moment, and say it once more at the end.

Mistakes that get you ignored

The mistakeThe fix
Planning a chain of messagesOne message. Write it to earn a reply.
Running it on every postOne post at a time, one that is already doing well.
A word that shows up in normal commentsPick a word nobody types by accident.
Making them reply before you send anythingGive first, ask second.
Leaving it on foreverTurn it off when the offer ends.

Test it before the post goes out

Comment the word from a second account. Check the message arrives, reads well on a phone, and the link works.
