Reels vs YouTube Shorts: specs and which to pick (2026)

As of October 2026, post the same 9:16 video to both. A YouTube Short can run up to 3 minutes and needs a title. An Instagram Reel can run up to 15 minutes and takes a real cover. Then lead with one by goal: Reels for a close audience, Shorts for search.

Are Reels and Shorts the same thing?

  • On the surface, yes. Both are short, vertical, full-screen video.
  • Both are shown to people who do not follow you yet.
  • The rules differ. A Short stops at 3 minutes, and YouTube decides it is a Short by shape alone. There is no switch. More in Why is my YouTube video not a Short?

Where Reels win

  • A Reel sends new viewers to your Instagram profile, Stories, DMs and link in bio.
  • That is closer to where selling and brand deals happen.
  • Good if you want people to know you, not just watch you.

Where Shorts win

  • Shorts live inside YouTube, and YouTube runs on search.
  • A clear title with the words people search for helps a Short get found long after the day it posts.
  • A Short can lead people to your longer YouTube videos. Instagram has no path like that.

One video, two texts

  • Export once at 9:16, 1080 x 1920. It fits Reels, Shorts and TikTok.
  • Keep it 3 minutes or shorter, so it still counts as a Short.
  • Write two texts. YouTube needs a title people would search for. Instagram reads the caption and the words on screen.
  • Post a clean file, with no watermark from another app.
  • How to set the Reel up: How to schedule Instagram Reels.

How to tell which one works for you

  • After 2 to 3 weeks, open Analytics in sprkly.
  • YouTube is scored on views. Instagram is scored on reach once sprkly has permission to read insights, and on likes and comments before that.
  • So compare views to views where you can. Reach and views are not the same number.

What to do this week

  1. Export your next video once at 9:16, 3 minutes or shorter.
  2. Schedule it to both in one post. Add a search title for YouTube and a caption for Instagram. Step by step: Post one video to TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
  3. Do it 3 times, then compare views in Analytics before you pick a lead.

Post both without double work

  • One sprkly post can go to Instagram and YouTube at the same time, with a different text on each.
  • sprkly schedules all of it on a free plan: 3 accounts and 10 queued posts per account, no card. That covers Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Start free.

How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?

Up to 3 minutes, as long as it is vertical or square. A wide video is a normal video at any length.
